Building Communities series
A-Kruunu is participating in the international Building Communities video series, which explores affordable housing innovations, solutions and implementations across Europe.
The Building Communities series consists of 24 thought-provoking documentary films of different styles lasting a few minutes each. A subject shared by all the films is affordable housing where sustainability is considered from a social, environmental and economic point of view. The series is a part of the activities of Housing Europe (the European Federation of Public, Cooperative and Social Housing), and it has been produced in commercial partnership with BBC StoryWorks.
A-Kruunu's residents featured in a video
A-Kruunu’s contribution depicts a visit to the Mansio family’s home in Helsinki. The family lives in one of A-Kruunu’s apartment buildings, which is a part of the Urban Families with Children development project. The first property of the Urban Families with Children development project is an apartment building with 40 apartments. The building is located on Fregatti Dygdenin kuja in Kalasatama, Helsinki, and its construction was completed in November 2019. The project is also a part of the City of Helsinki’s Kehittyvä kerrostalo programme.
In addition to interviews with the family, the video includes interviews with the project’s main designer, architect Vesa Humalisto, as well as Johanna Lilius, a researcher from Aalto University, who is studying the housing practices, preferences and needs of small families.
The series is on display across Europe
The series was launched during the Social Housing Film Festival, which was an on-line event that took place 16-17 June 2021. Housing Europe’s New European Bauhaus #BuildingCommunities Conference was organised at the same time, bringing together actors in the housing sector, architects as well as policy-makers and civil servants from different European cities and countries. The video featuring A-Kruunu was published at the beginning of July.
The Building Communities series will be widely displayed across Europe during the summer and autumn, including on the websites and social media channels of participants in the series, Housing Europe, and BBC Works
